Tower of the Americas Description

The cement column towering over San Antonio is a magnet for kids. One look and they just have to go up. Count on a chorus of "ooohs" on the way up as they gaze out elevator windows that go almost all the way to the top. Built in 1968 for the San Antonio's World's Fair, the tower boasts views (you're 750 feet in the air) that are pretty stellar in all directions, whether you look north toward Austin or south toward Laredo. Adding some higher wattage entertainment is the Skies Over Texas "4-D" ride, featuring aerial footage in a theater that has seat motion to match.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: The view from the top is always a hit with this age.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They'll probably be more amused by the revolving -- and pricey -- restaurant located one floor below the top.

Planning Notes

  • See the show. The 15-minute 4-D show is included in the price of admission, and runs throughout the day.
  • Buy when you get there. Advanced reservations are not required.

What we loved:
Fast ride to the top.

What we didn't love:
In the 3D movie, no one got the 3D glasses and the movie was ruined.

We just returned from Texas. I, my husband, and our 5 year old loved the view from the tower. We also ate in the revolving resturant and the food and service were tops. Well worth the trip. The best part was this, on one side of the tower there was a "wind tunnel" effect. It pulled my daughters and my long hair straight out to the side of our head and straight up.!!!!! We laughed so long and hard over how we looked. My husband took pictures and they are hysterical!
Very interesting historical info too. The gift shop had some really interesting things.
I highly recommend this for your vacation. I would go again.Read More
