Buckhorn Saloon and Museum Description
This hundred-year-old-plus establishment is definitely on the eccentric side. Original proprietor Albert Friedrich offered a shot of whiskey to anyone who brought in deer antlers, and the results are everywhere -- there are umpteen antlers and a bazillion taxidermed animals of all kinds. If collections of people (wax, not stuffed) is more your kid's thing then head to the recently added wax museum, depicting moments (some of them gruesome) from Texas history.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Mom and Dad know the animals are dead, but kids this age might not be so sure -- and a little spooked as a result.
School-Age Kids: The question "What happened to them?" is best answered with "they died a long time ago."
Pre-Teens & Teens: At this age, they'll either be entranced or horrified, depending upon their disposition towards taxidermy.
Planning Notes
- Grab a bite. The Buckhorn is primarily a bar, but in light of its contents, a very family-friendly bar. There is a café, but it serves lunch only.
- Buy a souvenir. Don't forget to stop by the curio shop to buy your (real) snake-head key chain.
