San Antonio Zoo Description
Whether or not you want to enter the new BugMania exhibit here is largely dependent on how you feel about insects ... with fur. True, these creepy crawlies are all safely enclosed. But even a glass barrier doesn't dim the shudder-inducing impact of a Desert Hairy Scorpion or tarantula. Of course, all that -- plus the other 3,000 or so kinder, gentler animals like giraffes, zebras, elephants, and hippos -- make the 56-acre zoo a delightful place for kids, who can gaze from afar or get up close at animal encounters.
Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: It's a very cute zoo, but on the small side; probably best for school age and younger.
Planning Notes
- Board the train. Plan to ride the miniature San Antonio Zoo Eagle train that makes 20-minute loops around Breckenridge Park (extra charge).
- Get up close. Animal Encounters are held twice daily at the Tiny Tot Nature Spot. You can also partake of animal feeding at Lory Landing.
- See it all. The Butterflies! Garden and the aquarium are great fun.
- Bring a towel. The Nature Spot has a small splash area -- be prepared with dry clothes for small children.
