George Ranch Historical Park Description
The Texan George in question is not a president, but rather a rancher, one of a line of folks who settled this sprawling acreage in 1824 and kept it running for 100 years, until the last of the family (Mamie and Albert George) passed it on as a historic attraction. The saga of the sprawling landmark lives on, as do the Jones, Ryon, Davis, and George "families" in the form of costumed actors playing out life through the generations, from the original homesteaders, through sharecropping, and the age of cowboys and cattle drives. It's a romantic bit of time travel indeed.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: For Texas kids, this is a great way to liven up those de rigueur history lessons; out-of-state kids (and their parents) will enjoy it just as much.
Planning Notes
- A taste of history. Don't just observe history, eat it up. Saturday historic meals are authentic, from the apple pudding at the prairie home to the beef stew with Cookie at the Chuck Wagon. Call for reservations and details.
- Out there. The ranch is one of the few truly remote Houston-area attractions. To maximize the trip, combine it with a visit to Brazos Bend State Park.
- Family tree. Take a minute to peruse the museum, where following the Ryon-to-George lineage adds up to a remarkable bit of ancestral cooperation.
