Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Description

Nowhere is the adage "art isn't limited to pictures on walls" more colorfully illustrated than at James Turrell's installation at the Museum of Fine Arts. What could have been merely functional -- an underground tunnel between two buildings -- is Turrell's piece of bona fide walk-through art, one that mesmerizes visitors with its changing colors and challenges to perception of depth and space. It's a nice starting point for discussion, but definitely not the only reason to visit the museum -- kids are sure to be wowed by the collection of more than 50,000 pieces of art.

Kid Tips

Babies: Ever the child-friendly establishment, the museum welcomes strollers (encourages them, actually), ostensibly to create art lovers from the earliest possible age.

School-Age Kids: The newest addition to kid-friendly programs is the Family Pack, hands-on materials and activities you can check out that are designed to help young kids make the most of a visit. Ask about it at the front desk.

Planning Notes

  • Family programs. In addition to free visits the first Sunday of every month, the museum hosts weekly drop-in projects and story time every Sunday, as well as family tours.
  • Impress them. Kids often relate to impressionist art, making the second floor gallery of the Audrey Jones Beck building a good place to start. It's also home to a large antiquities gallery that boasts its own mummy.
  • Opening act. Entering through the Caroline Wiess Law building has its own benefits, namely the eye-catching temporary exhibits near the main lobby.
  • Al fresco. Be sure to stop by the sculpture garden, located across the street and down a block at the corner of Bissonnet and Montrose streets.
  • Good eats. The Audrey Jones Beck entrance has the terrific eatery CafĂ© Express. It's a great place to take a break, to end your visit, or to order one of their box lunches to go.
