Brazos Bend State Park Description

Alligators in the wild -- that's all you need to know about this one-of-a-kind state park about an hour outside of Houston. Walk to the fishing pier and stand over the water and, chances are, you'll see a few of the big-toothed critters lounging in the sun or maybe even staring back. It's creepy being near these critters in the wild -- and utterly and completely cool. As the rangers say, "Stay on the paths and don't bother them, and they won't bother you." It's an experience you won't forget.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids determined to take off on their own might not be the best candidates for the park.

School-Age Kids: The on-site nature center (about a two-mile drive inside the park from the main parking lot) is a good place to start to get details about the park and the alligators, and to ease any nerves about the visit.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Alligators are typically associated with Louisiana and Florida, but it may surprise teens to know the entire eastern third of Texas is crawling with alligators, too.

Planning Notes

  • Alligator etiquette. The website offers sage advice for visitors, including to keep dogs on leashes and to stay out of the water. It's definitely worth a pre-visit read.
  • Comfort zone. If the temperature's comfortable for you to be out, it is for the alligators, too -- they favor cool mornings and evenings in summer. Visit just about any time during other seasons to ensure a sighting.
  • Foot power. Myriad trails, including one that features an observation tower, range from one to five miles. Look for trail maps near the visitor center.
  • Far out. The park is off the beaten path. Eat somewhere off the main highway (US-59) or bring a picnic. Either way, pack water -- you'll need it.
  • Farther out. The park is also home to George Observatory (separate admission). Call 979-553-3400 for operating hours.
