Museum of the American Railroad Description
A sure bet for 3-12-year-olds, the museum is home to some of the most amazing trains cars and engines of the golden years of railroading including Big Boy — the largest steam locomotive ever built. Kids in this range are actually sized perfectly for standing in the massive wheels of the engines, and they can even climb aboard and pretend they're the conductor or engineer. The shop has a fabulous collection of toys and souveniers for enthusiasts.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Set up your own hide-and-seek; see if they can find the mail chute in the postal car of the biggest wheels on the massive engines.
School-Age Kids: They'll be most fascinated with the pull-down sleepers and climbing up and down the various cars that are open for inspection.
Planning Notes
- No stroller. If you're traveling with baby, then best to carry in a Bjorn.
- Hard to find. The museum isn't really on the grounds of Fair Park but a bit out of the way, so carry along a detailed map.
