Sid Richardson Museum Description
Oilman Richardson amassed a collection of Western art focused almost entirely on the works of Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington, and the result of his passion is a museum that's incredibly accessible and child-friendly. Scavenger hunts lure kids in; an 11-year-old was asked to sketch her favorite work and sat on the floor below the painting while the security guard smiled approvingly. The small museum — just two galleries — is fronted by a wonderfull shop which features local artwork and plenty of unusual and affordable items for children.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Be sure to ask the guard or staffer for a scavenger hunt sheet for little ones (3 - 7); they get a sheet designed just for them that helps them identify works by visual clues. They also get a choice of prizes when they turn in their sheets.
School-Age Kids: There's a hunt for older children as well; this one engages them to think about what those in the paintings might be thinking or feeling, as well as asks them to name their favorite work. Yep, they get a prize, too.
Planning Notes
- Validate yourself The museum offers parkign validation for cars parked in any of the Sundance Square lots, so be sure to bring your ticket along.
- Manners matter A good primer on museum etiquette for kids is offered via a sign in the lobby; it's a nice chance for parents to review with kids before entering.
