Walking Tour
Bureau of Engraving and Printing Description
A fascinating tour through one of only two locations in the country where U.S. currency is printed, kids can see the colored inks, the stacks of paper and almost the entire process of how money is made. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are printed during the 45-minute tours, which includes a walk on an enclosed walkway over the currency production floor. Two floors of interactive exhibits tell the history of paper curency, and live demonstration exhibits, including a mutilated currency desk, are part of the tour.
Kid Tips
Babies: Tough one for babies if they're at all squirmy; calm babies who enjoy time in a Bjorn should do well during the waiting time and the tour. Visitors bus from one building to the printing building, so best to leave the stroller.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Best to skip this attraction, as the money-making process won't fascinate them as it does older children.
Planning Notes
- Walk-ups welcome. Walk-up tours are on a first-come basis; best to reserve a tour ahead of time to ensure a spot at your desired time. And be sure to arrive 30 minutes before the tour time.
- No kidding. Like most governemnt buildings, they're not kidding when they say leave cell phones and cameras in the car. Check the Web site for a complete list of prohibited items.
