National Cowgirl Hall of Fame & Museum Description
A history of the cowgirl — from the ranches of the frontier to the rhinestone-bedecked girls of the rodeo to those made famous in Hollywood, the Cowgirl Museum is all about the spirit and spunk of the ladies who won the West. The interactive museum displays get-ups of cowgirls, from well-worn boots and jeans to elaborately beaded and costumes. Short films provide a history of the cowgirl and her importance in settling the West and continuing modern ranching traditions.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Plenty of make-believe opportunities, from riding the bull to donning cowgirl kit and cooking over a campfire.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Have them pose in a movie poster (additional charge) and play the old-fashioned jukeboxes to learn about singing cowgirls.
Planning Notes
- Saddle up. Few cowgirls will be able to resist the gift shop, well-stocked with all sorts of western-themed gear, toys and décor.
- Ride the bucking bronc. Children can ride a (slow) mechanical bull in front of a green screen — the image is then captured on grainy black and white film for a vintage look that can be downloaded at home.
- Lots of make believe. Little ones can sit by the campfire and cook, dress in western wear from boots to chaps and hats, even mount a pony for make believe ride on the range. Listen to music from Dale Evans, Patsy Cline and others on vintage jukeboxes, which is "Coolio," as one 11-year-old pronounced it.
