Stockyards Rodeo at the Cowtown Coliseum Description

A truly authentic Texas experience, the Stockyards Rodeo is a weekly event that draws contestants from all over Texas, as well as other states. This is the real deal, with cowboys lined up outside the ticket booth pre-rodeo to register for the evening's events, a rodeo queen who rides out between events carrying sponsor's flags and even a boot shining booth. There are only 10 rows of seats — plus a VIP area #8212; so every seat has a great view, with the box seats getting closest to the action.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Let the littlest buckaroos (7 and younger) compete for prizes in the mutton scramble; the kids come down into the rodeo ring and chase a young sheep with the winner determined by the first child who pulls a piece of the ribbon off the sheep. For kids (8 and older) the same contest applies, but with a different animal; this time, a calf is chased by the kids hoping to score a piece of ribbon and a prize.

Planning Notes

  • Seat yourself. While the best seats are in the boxes ($20 a ticket), sitting so close to the auction may include the occasional spray of dirt from the hooves of fast-moving horse and rider.
  • Opening act. The Historic cowtown coliseum was first indoor rodeo venue in the United States. More locals than tourists, only 10 rows of seating in a ring, each event opens with the rodeo queen astride her horse, decked out in rhinestones, circling the coliseum to patriotic music.
  • Wild West Show. In June, July and August, the Pawnee Bill Wild West Show takes place in the Coliseum; check the schedule online for details.
  • Cash is king. It's cash-only for the food & beverage booths.
