Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza Description
For parents, it is a goosebump-inducing experience, for kids more of a history lesson. The final hours of John F. Kennedy's life and the shock of his assassination are played out in pictures, film and audio; audio tours are included in admission. Artifacts from the time cover Kennedy's campaign, life and the investigation into his death, while the exhibits explain everything from Camelot to the conspiracy theories that continue to fascinate today. There are plenty of interactive displays to engage the interest of pre-teens and teenagers.
Kid Tips
Babies: Strolling is the way to go through the museum; while the initial elevator ride and exhibits can be a bit crowded, there's plenty of space to move around once through the initial exhibits.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Skip this one for anyone younger than 10, as there is nothing to pique their interest.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Best to give them a primer on Kennedy and the horror of that November day before arriving at the museum, and be sure to pick up the audio players so they can proceed at their own pace.
Planning Notes
- No flashing. Leave the cameras behind; there's absolutely no photography — and don't let the teens pull out their camera phones — as most of the images within the museum are copyrighted.
- First in line. Best to hit the museum at the opening on weekend days, as there's virtually no line; school groups, however, generally attend between the opening and lunchtime, so plan accordingly.
