Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District Description
A true taste of Texas, the Stockyards district is rich in history, as well as fun things to do. These stockyards were the last major stop on the cattle drives north for drovers — a place to stock up, eat up and play before hitting the Chisholm Trail. The cattle driving history is alive today with drovers, wearing authentic clothing, who steer the herd down Exchange Street. Small eateries line Exchange and Main streets, while shopping runs to Western wear, antiques and souvenirs. Fee-based attractions include the Cowboy Hall of Fame, the trail rides and the cattlepen maze, among others.
Kid Tips
Babies: Best to tote baby in a Bjorn as the sidewalks range from concrete to buckboard and crowds can be pretty thick during the herd drives and on weekends.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Arrive early soo toddlers can not only get a good seat for the drive, but also have the chance to chat with the drovers and watch them crack bullwhips and perform other tricks.
School-Age Kids: The all-wood maze is surefire fun for school-aged kids; pre-teens and teens won't mind taking their younger siblings through the maze.
Pre-Teens & Teens: There's nothing like saddling up after watching the herd; sign up for a family trail ride (between the Hyatt Place Hotel and the Cowboy Hall of Fame) for a trek from the Stockyards along the Trinty River.
Planning Notes
- Steer clear. Drovers (aka the cowboys) herd Longhorns right down Exchange Street every day at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.; be on time as the cattle drive is over quickly, but the drovers are available before and after to answer questions.
- Come hungry. There are a huge variety of restaurants around the Stockyards, from taco stands to the upscale but affordable Lonesome Dove Bistro, H3 Ranch and local favorite Joe T. Garcias.
