Lady Bird Lake Description
Set out in a kayak or paddle boat on Lady Bird Lake and take your pick of vistas. Head left off the dock for peaceful Red Bud Island, where you can picnic and check out the swans (but watch out for them -- they're mean). Head right, and see the sights of the city. Ambitious paddlers could go the length of the six-mile river, but do yourself a favor and head upstream first. That way the downstream, less challenging part of the journey is on your way home. Whichever path you take, keep an eye out for turtles who like to sun themselves on the banks.

Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: By age 9 or 10, most kids are ready to kayak on their own. Go ahead and race them -- but don't be too demoralized when the kids win.
Planning Notes
- Expect a wait. Rentals are first come, first serve, which means there might be a wait on some weekend days.
- Paddle as a group. Rentals accommodate all ages, but you'll have to have at least two adults for the paddle boats (they're harder to navigate than they look).
- Suit up. Life jackets (available on site) required for all children 16 and under.
- Quench your thirst. Paddling can get tiring, so bring plenty of water.
