Austin Steam Train Description

For train-loving kids, venturing out on these vintage damsels is a little like an expedition from a storybook. Roaring engines pull passengers in 1920s cars on 75-minute trips over the dramatic San Gabriel River Bridge to Bertram. Once there, get out and stretch your legs, or stay on board and watch the train do its turnaround. For real smiles, check out the view from the open-air vestibules located between cars. Get all the latest train scoop from overalls-clad engineers, who happily pose for pictures and answer questions about the train -- when they're not driving it, of course.

Kid Tips

Babies: Lots of lap children come for the rides. There's no cost for infants, and they're often mesmerized by the scenery.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Engineers are happy to welcome kids aboard the engines (when it's stopped), something small children adore.

Planning Notes

  • What's in a name? Though it's called Austin Steam Train, the organization currently uses a vintage diesel engine. The steam engine is out for repairs, but is planned to be back in operation in the fall of 2008.
  • Plan for lunch. Food is available on the train and at the depot. Guests are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch.
  • Book early. Seasonal and holiday excursions such as the Harry Potter, Halloween, and Yuletide-themed trips often sell out early.
  • Keep an eye out for Thomas. The kid-favorite engine often makes appearances here.
  • Stick to coach. The cost for "lounge" cars is significantly higher than coach. The benefits of the higher price include tables for activities such as coloring, but kids are often amused just by being on board.

What we loved:
Who doesn't love a train? There's tons to see

What we didn't love:
Definitely has an age cap

For little ones only. They'll love looking around at everything. Especially the toddlers. What kid doesn't love a train? it's just the perfect length of time so they don't get bored. Obviously, it's geared for a younger set.Read More
