Umlauf Sculpture Garden Description
Kids at this tranquil spot might think they're taking a garden-variety nature tour. But the outdoor museum is really a stellar introduction to art. Spread across six wooded acres are 56 sculptures, through which kids skip, run, and jump to their heart's delight. Occasionally little ones stop to admire the works with their hands. That's perfectly fine. In this venue, touching is encouraged, albeit gently. In fact, some sculptures, like the hippo named Lotus, look like they've been perpetually loved to a sheen.

Toddlers & Pre-K: It's never too early to introduce kids to art, especially in such a child-friendly environment.
School-Age Kids: Ask about the "sculpture safari," large laminated plastic maps that turn art gazing into a game. Identify all the sculpture and get a little prize.
Planning Notes
- Many of the sculptures are nudes. They're all tasteful, however it's something to be aware of so there are no surprises.
- Enjoy the solitude. The six acres are fenced in, with most spots (save for the top of the waterfall) visible from anywhere in the garden.
- Chat up the employees. Museum staff members are an exceptionally friendly lot who will happily work with you and your kids to make the most of the experience.
- Grab a bite. Zilker Park is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic.

It's never too early to expose the kids to fine arts. It's great as just a place to get away for a bit and to sneak in some education. The older kids will love it, especially as they begin to understand what art is all about.Read More
