Shelby Street Bridge Description
Built in 1909, the Shelby Street Bridge was originally known as the Sparkman Street Bridge, connecting Sparkman Street and Shelby Avenue. It was the first in North America to have concrete arched trusses, known as a truss bridge. After a $15 million renovation in 1992, the bridge was converted for pedestrian use, with elevators, a wide center lane reserved for bicycles, and four scenic overlooks that have gorgeous views of the Cumberland River. Country music fans will recognize it from several music videos including "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)" by Big & Rich.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Being able to brag they conquered the longest pedestrian bridge in the world may just entice them to walk across it with you.
Planning Notes
- Visit at night. The bridge itself is quite a sight to behold, particularly after dark, when it is dramatically lit.
