Pink Palace Museum Description

Southerners know and love the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain, which got its start in Memphis. Founder Clarence Saunders gave his pink marble mansion to the city to use as a museum, and his legacy includes shrunken heads, ornate silver, and multiple pieces of Memphis history. A delightful miniature circus, roaring dinosaurs, and natural history exhibit keep the kids entertained, and the planetarium provides for a bit of a break for the parents. The museum turns into an enchanting winter wonderland over the Christmas holidays with the festive Enchanted Forest display.

Kid Tips

Babies: Easy strolling throughout the museum.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Skip the shrunken heads (too scary) and head instead to the nature exhibits for the chance to get up close with the (preserved) animals. Be sure to stop in the vintage grocery store.

School-Age Kids: Head straight for the shrunken heads, and let their imaginations run wild.

Pre-Teens & Teens: They may find the displays and exhibits a bit of a bore, but an IMAX movie will be a hit.

Planning Notes

  • Get schooled. Call ahead to find out if school groups will be in full force on the day you visit; most teachers give the students a scavenger-hunt type paper to complete, which makes for plenty of crowding and chaos.
  • Picnic time. The museum's small eatery is surprisingly good, so if it is a nice day, pop in for a to-go lunch and head out to the picnic tables on the grounds for an al fresco lunch.
