Lichterman Nature Center Description

An oasis on the east side of town, the Lichterman Nature Center is surprising to first timers both for its space and for the real "away-from-it-all" feel. It's not uncommon for the kids to spy snakes, raccoons and possum, and owls regularly swoop down from their perches. Easy walks, a chance to get up close to the animals, and peaceful surroundings add up to a stop that'll be acceptable even to kids who aren't into nature.

Kid Tips

Babies: The boardwalk is the best for strolling; otherwise, you'll be hiking with junior on your back. But the off-boardwalk nature walks are easy and short.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Start with the boardwalk loop, then pause to feed the fish. Finish up with a visit to the nature center, where they'll see -- and maybe even get to touch -- the many animals that inhabit the area.

School-Age Kids: As above -- but add on a hike through the dense forest.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Reserve them a spot on a guided walk, held twice each morning. They may crab about being forced to do this, but they'll love you for it, as even the grouchiest teen will be fascinated by what they'll learn.

Planning Notes

  • It's only natural. You will very likely see a snake along the boardwalk area -- it's their favorite place to hang out and get some sun.
  • Bring quarters. The fish love to eat and the kids love to throw them food. Buy it by the handful right on the bridge overlooking the pond.
