Shelby Farms Description
Five times larger that New York's Central Park, Shelby Farms is the national headquarters of Ducks Unlimited, the wildlife conservation and wetlands preservation group. Hiking and bike trails, paddle boats and fishing, trail rides and horseback lessons, and a shooting range are offered; there's plenty of room for kite-flying and picnicking, and buffalo roam select fields. Seasonal events at the Agricenter Showplace and Arena include a farmer's market, corn maze, and equine events.
Kid Tips
Babies: Spread out a blanket and enjoy the weather, or strap into a sports stroller for a mommy-and-me workout.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Got to the catch-and-release fishing pond for some pre-lunch fun, then stop and see the bison on your way to a Patriot Lake picnic.
School-Age Kids: Take a short hike to burn off some energy, then fly a kite if there's wind and throw a Frisbee if there's not. The bison are a must for this set as well, and a paddle boat ride (with a parent's strong legs pumping) can be a treat.
Pre-Teens & Teens: They think they're so strong, so challenge them to a paddle boat race.
Planning Notes
- Perfect for a picnic. There's essentially no food or beverage service at Shelby Farms, so bring snacks or even a picnic lunch. Several fast-food establishments are easily accessible on nearby Germantown Road.
- Bring a kite. There's plenty of space to fly.
