National Civil Rights Museum Description
The Lorraine Hotel -- the place where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968 -- is the heart of this museum. It and the adjacent gallery are powerful reminders of the struggle for equal rights for all people, regardless of their skin color. The museum depicts the hardship of African-Americans in the South and recounts how the civil rights movement influenced -- and continues to impact -- the world.

Kid Tips
Babies: This place is on the quiet side, so if your baby is crying too long you might want to hustle him out for the sake of others.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Not the right pick for this set; they're going to want to touch everything and hearing "no" might be tough.
School-Age Kids: History is starting to come in to view for this age group, and the exhibits and testimonials will help convey the importance of a watershed era in the American experience.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The best age range for an epiphany about prejudice, justice and the role of race in American society.
Planning Notes
- Bring a hanky. Not for the kids, but for yourself. The impact of the exhibits and the solemnity of the preserved hotel are emotional, especially for adults.
- Go in early morning. During the school year, the museum is filled with school groups, so fully absorbing the exhibits is tough.
