Ruby Falls at Lookout Mountain Description
Kids will love learning about the discovery of Ruby Falls: An old Indian tale told of a huge cavern and waterfalls existing deep within Lookout Mountain, so a team set out in the early 1900s to see if they could find them. After about a dozen hours of crawling they came across these wonderous formations which soon became world-renowned.
Kid Tips
Babies: It's too much of a nuisance to bring babies here -- long stints in a carrier while you navigate narrow passages and dark spaces.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Whether to take the little ones is totally dependant on each individual child's attitude toward moving through tight and dark spaces. A reward lies at the end -- the beautifully lit falls.
School-Age Kids: Bring it on! The best age range for Ruby Falls. They'll be completely into the expedition and the stories of Indians and cave explorers.
Pre-Teens & Teens: During the fall season, a haunted cavern expedition is offered -- the perfect thrill for adventure-seeking teens, even though they'll enjoy the more basic daylight trek as well.
Planning Notes
- Best for those with an explorer's spirit. This is the place for those who don't mind moving through darkness and confining spaces on the way to the formations.
