Tennessee Valley Railroad Description
It's the ultimate scenic route, as a train hugs the Hiawassee River gorge, taking youngsters on the kind of journeys they've only read about. There are hour-long round-trips on a vintage diesel or steam-powered train on the Missionary Ridge local line, a variety of adventures along the Hiawassee River, and a six-hour round-trip journey to Chickamauga, Georgia, which includes a layover in the quaint town.
Kid Tips
Babies: The rocking rails should lull them to sleep, so sit back and relax.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Undoubtedly they'll have the most enthusiasm and the most questions, but take them on one of the hour-long trips to ensure their spirits stay high.
School-Age Kids: The North Pole Express runs in November and December; the rest of the year, one of the Hiawassee trips will best hold their attention.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Schedule them for a ride on the "Eerie Express" in October.
Planning Notes
- Fall back. It can be tough to get a seat on any of the trains during the fall, as the brilliant foliage provides a stunning backdrop for the trips. Plan way ahead if you'll be visiting in the autumn months.
- Pack snacks. There's a full-service deli in the station, but only some trains provide lunches.
