Raccoon Mountain Caverns Description
One of the most diverse cave formations in the Southeast, Raccoon Mountain offers more than five miles of mapped passageways. Guided tours range from a 45-minute, school-aged appropriate survey of the Crystal Palace to a longer wet-and-wild expedition that teens will love. Junior Indiana Joneses will thrill at the chance to pan for fossils, arrowheads, and gold. Giving Raccoon Mountain a bit of funkiness is the fact there's an on-site fun park with go-karts, cabins for rent, and even a campground.
Kid Tips
Babies: Skip this attraction if you've got a baby.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Can they handle dark, possibly creepy spaces? If so, then take the Crystal tour and follow up with some panning for gold.
School-Age Kids: The Crystal tour and panning are a sure bet; kids with a bit more of an adventurous streak may want to get wet and wild with older sibs.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The wet and creepy cave beckons; they'll be loaded up with helmets, lights, and other gear, and will surely have some great memories after their expedition.
Planning Notes
- Layer. The cave will be chilly, even in the summer.
- Dress down. Wear old clothes, and bring something to change into for each family member who decides on the "wet and wild" tour.
