Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park Description
The battles for Chickamauga and Chattanooga are recalled at the two battlefields, which together make up the nation's first National Military Park. Hands-on and interactive exhibits bring the battles to life, while chilling tales of the struggle are recounted by park rangers. The kids will be impressed by the fact that the bloodiest two-day battle of the entire Civil War was fought at Chickamauga. Living history demonstrations and battle reenactments are held throughout the summer months.
Kid Tips
Babies: The auto tour is a great way to see the park and keep babies happy; otherwise, carry junior along in a backpack or baby carrier.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Let them run in the fields and explore the cannon at the visitor's center.
School-Age Kids: Start with exhibits in the Chickamauga Visitor's Center, but save the Fuller gun collection (over 300 firearms) for last.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Spend plenty of time in the visitor's center, then head out to the battlefield to imagine the fighting that took place there.
Planning Notes
- Take a tour. An overview of Chickamauga should come first; a 7-mile auto tour brings easy access to monuments depicting the battle and its heroes.
- Carry on. There are limited vending machines and snacks available at the park, so plan ahead.
