Coolidge Park Description

Getting to Coolidge Park is almost as fun as the park itself; the journey over the Tennessee River via the Walnut Street pedestrian bridge (just a stone's throw from the aquarium) is a novelty for kids. They'll be inclined to run, not walk, once they step onto the bridge (take a deep breath, mom!). The sturdy wooden structure takes you from the touristy side of the city to the more sedate and funky north side, with it's collection of boutique stores and coffee shops. The first stop once across the river, however, is Coolidge Park. A beautifully restored, hand-carved carousel and water play area await, and the hardest decision of the day will be which to try first.

Kid Tips

Babies: It's a bit of a bumpy ridge across the bridge for a stroller, so don't expect a napping baby to stay asleep.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Their little legs may lag on the quarter-mile river crossing, but there are benches along the way for breaks.

School-Age Kids: They may grumble at the return walk back over the river, so challenge them to a series of races from bench to bench.

Planning Notes

  • Bring a towel. Face it, they're gonna get soaked in that water play park. Dress them appropriately and bring a towel or change of clothes.
  • Pack snacks. There are plenty of places to grab a cup of coffee or a quick adult-friendly bite, but kid snacks are harder to come by.
  • Avoid the weekend. An early morning visit is the best on the weekend, but anytime is a good time during the week.
