Incline Railway
Good-for-Kids Rating
Train
Incline Railway Description
It's a mile-long feat of mechanical engineering: A steep trolley-car-type ride straight up the side of Lookout Mountain. At the top, you'll be on the highest point of the mountain, and it's said that even the Great Smokey Mountains -- more than 100 miles to the east -- are visible on a clear day. Younger children will get a joyful scare from the steep, 72 percent incline; if you're traveling with teens, they may think it's a bore.
Kid Tips
Babies: A good morning out for baby; there's no need for a stroller, but a frontpack carrier might make exploring the observation area up top a bit easier.
Toddlers & Pre-K: They'll get the most out of the trip. Have them checking for signs of wildlife along the way.
School-Age Kids: The most scientific among them will be curious about the engineering aspects of going a mile up a mountain at such a steep incline.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Pre-teens will still think the railway is cool, but older teens (14 and above) might find it seriously lacking in adventure.
Planning Notes
- A quick trip. It's a 20-minute round trip on the railway.
- Buy the package. The combo tickets for Rock City, Incline Railway, and Ruby Falls will save you some money if you plan to see all three.
