Bluff View Art District Description

A collection of B&Bs, galleries, and restaurants may not at first blush seem so appealing for children. But the public art pieces scattered throughout the neighborhood, the chance to play a game of bocce high above the river, and the scent of artisan breads in the oven and chocolate confections being whipped up are appealing to kids of every age. Parents will appreciate the al fresco dining options and ease of walking the area.

Kid Tips

Babies: Navigating with a stroller can be a challenge. The walk up to the district from downtown is a snap, but the tiny doorways and multiple sets of stairs make for frustrating travel. Either park the stroller and carry baby, or bring along a front or backpack carrier for hands-free exploring.

Toddlers & Pre-K: The least likely group to appreciate anything except the gourmet chocolates; encourage their inner peeping Tom, as peeking in windows at the culinary artistry taking place is perfectly acceptable.

School-Age Kids: They'll love the shiny sculptures that dot the walkway from downtown, and playing hide-and-seek in the twisting staircases between the buildings.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Tempt their taste buds with the hand-crafted chocolates and homemade pastas, then challenge them to a game of bocce.

Planning Notes

  • Take the bridge. Parking's at a premium up in the neighborhood, especially on weekends. But the walk from downtown is a breeze, thanks to the new lighted pedestrian bridge that connects the aquarium area to the neighborhood.
  • Take turns. Art galleries and children don't always mix, so be a considerate patron and leave one adult outside while the other browses. If you're traveling solo with the kids, then window shopping is your best bet.
