Huntington Beach State Park Description
Just 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, peaceful Huntington Beach State Park feels like a different world. The wide, uncrowded beaches might be the draw, but there's more than meets the eye here: kids can try their hand at crabbing, hiking, fishing, and more. It's also one of the best birding locations in South Carolina, so come prepared with binoculars, a field guide, and the birding checklist from the park website (which lists hundreds of birds that frequent the area). Don't miss the Education Center, which is home to a baby alligator.

School-Age Kids: There are several free park programs every day on topics like seining, alligators, and beachcombing.
Pre-Teens & Teens: It's the beach. What's not to like? Also popular is a 2-hour kayak tour ($30) for ages 9 and up (kids under 16 must be accompanied by an adult). Reserve a spot at the Education Center.
Planning Notes
- Bring bug spray. Seriously. Mosquitoes will form buffet lines on your arms as you walk through the marshes.
- Pack lunch. Picnic shelters are available for free (if they're not reserved).
- Plan ahead. Look at the program schedule on the website a few days in advance because some programs require advance registration.
- Stock up. The gift shop sells souvenirs, as well as some basic supplies for those camping in the park.
