Charleston City Market Description
If a horse-drawn carriage is the traditional way to tour the city, the Charleston City Market is the traditional way to shop. Kids love browsing the colorful booths in this covered market. Built in 1841, it houses vendors selling everything from local candy to rugs. But the quintessential Charleston souvenir is the sweet grass basket, a traditional African-American craft practiced here for 300 years. If the price seems steep (typically at least $50), keep in mind that they take more than 12 hours to weave.

Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: If all of your kids' toys blink or make noise, they'll be captivated by the hand-made toys sold in the market.
School-Age Kids: As you walk around the market area, look for the ladies weaving sweet grass baskets. Kids will find the process fascinating.
Planning Notes
- Make a day of it. The Waterfront Park is near the Charleston City Market, so rolling them into the same trip makes sense.
