Providence Children's Museum Description

In an industrial area on the outskirts of the city, the Providence Children's Museum pops up like a delightful surprise. The building alone is an exercise in creativity; every inch of this transformed factory is a marvel, fantastically designed and bursting with fun stuff to look at and do. Exhibits are exceptionally engaging and well thought-out. A favorite includes Welcome to Rhode Island, a perfectly constructed play zone that tells the story of immigration through intricately created scaled-down houses. Like everything else here, it's so much fun, parents will want to play, too.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Littlewoods is designed for kids 4 and under, and includes an enclosed area with a climbing area and toys. A great place for kids to play, and for mom and dad to grab a seat and catch their breath.

School-Age Kids: Don't miss the percussion gizmo in the garden. It's got numerous surfaces for creating a fabulous kind of symphony.

Planning Notes

    • Bring your own food. There's no restaurant here, so the museum encourages visitors to bring their own. If it's nice, eat outside in the lovely Children's Garden or have an indoor picnic in the designated activity room. No food is allowed in exhibit halls, however.
    • Make time. This museum is so enticing, kids will want to sit down and delve into the activities. Plan on being here two to four hours to enjoy it all.
    • Free parking. There's a small lot for the museum, but on busy days (especially rainy days), it fills up fast. If you're out of luck on parking in the lot, look for a metered space on the street.
    • Freebies. Get in for free on the first Sunday of every month (all day), as well as the third Friday of every month (5 to 8 p.m.).
