Amazing Grace Harbor Tours Description
Watching the harbor boats is one thing—actually being on one is a whole different story. It may not be your private yacht, but the Amazing Grace gets points for being a lovely, smooth-cruising, introductory water tour that, at one hour, gets kids close to the important sights (mansions, yachts, lighthouses) without stretching little ones' attention spans. Plus, it's got that all-important snack bar for thirst quenching—and a bathroom for what comes later.
Kid Tips
Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will like Amazing Grace, but may be even more fascinated by some of the port's sailing ships. The schooner Madeleine (www.cruisenewport.com; 401-847-0298) is one of many that offer tours. Prices are steeper and it isn't for those with motion sickness, but it's a treat they'll remember.
Planning Notes
- Stormy weather. Reservations are not required, but tours can be affected by weather and/or private events. Call ahead to confirm your desired tour time.
- Grab your coat. There's a reason Newport sells so many windbreakers with its name on it. Even on a hot day, the coastal breeze can surprise you. Bottom line: bring a light jacket.
- Lighthouse attraction. The tour offers nice views of area lighthouses, particularly the especially lovely beacon on Rose Island. Families with interested kids can visit the island via the Newport-Jamestown Ferry. Really interested families can even stay there and be a lighthouse keeper for a night (reserve well in advance). Visit RoseIslandLighthouse.org.
- Manual labor. If you'd prefer to see the harbor under your own steam, rental sailboats are available through Sail Newport (www.sailnewport.com), while kayaks are available at Kayak Rentals at Christie's Landing (401-840-9249).
