Brenton Point State Park Description
You can't miss this stunning ocean-side park—on any given day, the sky above it teems with kites. Kite flying enthusiasts are drawn by the location (where the Atlantic meets Narragansett Bay) and the exceptional kite-flying winds; kids are drawn by the colors and fanciful designs of the whirling and twirling kites. Much more than just a kiddie pastime, Brenton Point draws the pros—national competitors (who knew there was such a thing?) whose expertise allows them to maneuver multiple kites in synch in a veritable aerial ballet. It's an amazing sight. Pull up a piece of grass and marvel at the skyward show.
Kid Tips
Babies: Open space, fresh air, the ocean; the park is a great place to spread a blanket and let them enjoy the view.
Toddlers & Pre-K: Guaranteed to love it. Count on them to want a kite of their own.
Pre-Teens & Teens: The kites will entertain older kids for a while, but expect them to become more interested in the ocean across the street. The shoreline is all rocks, and the area is plastered with signs warning visitors to keep off. It only takes a quick glance to see how cooperative everyone is (or isn't).
Planning Notes
- Fly a kite. Kites are for sale at the on-site kiosk run by Kitt Kites. Be prepared; they start around $15, but the fancy ones can go well into the hundreds.
- Be curious. Pros come here to "fly" with their friends. Most are happy to answer questions about how they do what they do.
- Bathrooms on board. A public park with bathroom facilities? Nirvana!
