Astor's Beechwood Mansion Description
Oh, how the rich folk live: Maids, butlers, and cooks. And the Astors? Let's just say they made the mere wealthy look like peasants. The upper-crust at this "cottage" by the sea don't just let you see their stuff—they join the party. Costumed actors dressed as Astor residents and staff lead entertaining, kid-friendly tours through the manor, showing how the other half lived in the nineteenth century. Which half (master or servant) you meet up with depends on when you stop by.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: All ages are welcome, but parents may be asked to take an active child outside to avoid disrupting the tour.
School-Age Kids: In season (July through October), the Tuesday "Evening With the Astors" event is a treat. The program includes a candlelight tour, dancing, and music of the Victorian era, and is extremely popular with girls this age. (Separate admission required.)
Pre-Teens & Teens: Normally blasé teens—especially blasé teens who think that "mansion" equals "stodgy museum"—will be won over by costumes and always in-character actors. They also might enjoy the Thursday "Murder at the Mansion" event (July through October, separate admission), an interactive mystery murder tour.
Planning Notes
- Call to confirm hours. The mansion closes for special events. Save yourself the disappointment and call before you visit.
- Take a walk. Astor's Beechwood is one of the only mansions that connects to the Cliff Walk directly. Ask what time the gates will close before you head out to avoid a long detour back to your car.
- Yule tide. Christmas, when the house is adorned for the season, is an especially beautiful time for a tour.
