Children's Museum of Pittsburgh Description

This top-notch museum appeals to kids of all ages with unique exhibits not found in many other children's museums. The gravity room tests kids' balancing skills with its tilted floor and carefully drawn perspective; the Text Rain exhibit uses an interactive video screen to allow kids to catch and bounce falling letters with their shadows; an intricate set of pulleys and nets lets kids move balls and parachutes all over a huge, domed room; and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood delights kids and nostalgic adults with a castle, puppets, and trolley.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: Younger preschoolers will enjoy the rice table and train table in the Nursery on the second floor, and older ones will fit right in at the main exhibits on the first floor.

School-Age Kids: All of the exhibits are targeted to school age youngsters. Kids this age especially enjoy working together in the Garage to work the pulleys.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Young adults who may feel a little old for the museum can produce sophisticated artwork in the large and well-stocked Studio, where they can paint and make prints.

Planning Notes

    • Wardrobe malfunction. Bring a change of clothing. Although raincoats and plastic shoes are provided at Waterplay (on the third floor), kids still can get wet.
    • Eat elsewhere. The café is uninspiring, with offerings like microwaved pizza. Combine this visit with one to the Warhol museum and eat in that museum's basement café instead.
    • Save a buck. All tickets are $8 on Thursdays, saving a dollar on the kids' admission fee and $2 on the adult fee.
