Philadelphia Museum of Art Description
The Philadelphia Museum of Art, famous for its front steps (from the movie "Rocky"), features an abundance of family and children's activities. Sunday Family Programs, for example, offer kid-friendly performances, gallery tours, and art projects for kids ages 3 to 10. During the week, families can take advantage of Self-Guided Family Tours and Children's Audio Tours to explore the collections on their own. Budding artists ages 3 to 12 can take art classes -- no experience is necessary, and the museum provides all the materials.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Sunday programs are perfect for younger children, with shows, art projects, and other activities.
School-Age Kids: Interactive audio guides for children ages 6-10 are available for $5 at the Visitor Services Desks. The gift shop has great children's art supplies and activities.
Planning Notes
- Decide beforehand what you'd like to see. With 83 galleries plus other exhibits, you can't see the entire museum in one day. Check the website for exhibits ahead of time, or stop by Visitors Services to get a free printed guide focusing on themes like African-American Artists, Winter Wonderland, or Arms and Armor.
- Go on Sunday. Kid-friendly performances, gallery tours, and art projects are at their peak on Sundays. Plus, admission is "pay what you wish" all day.
- Go in the late morning or early afternoon. Introductory walks are offered for first-time visitors every day at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the museum has great dining options for lunch.
- Download a podcast. Free podcasts are available on the website to download onto your iPod for a self-guided tour.
