Franklin Institute Science Museum Description

This museum is a hands-on paradise for kids of all ages and their parents. It's anchored by the Science Center, with three floors of interactive exhibits. KidScience lets kids 5-8 battle evil and save the world in the name of science; Space Command lets them find their houses using a satellite home-tracking device; the Train Factory puts them at the controls of a 350-ton locomotive; and the two-story-tall Giant Heart has been a favorite for 50 years. Other attractions include the Fels Planetarium and the IMAX Theater.

Kid Tips

Toddlers & Pre-K: The Giant Heart is popular with kids who like to climb and explore. Science Park is an outdoor exhibit that includes swing sets, tunnels, and a giant climb-through tire.

School-Age Kids: Check out KidScience and Space Command, designed especially for kids this age.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Older kids will gravitate toward the IMAX films; check the website for listings and show times.

Planning Notes

  • Plan to eat there. There's so much to see and do at the Franklin Institute that it's easiest to eat lunch there. Options include cafeteria-style dining, fine dining, and brown-bag lunchrooms with vending machines.
  • Check your memberships. If you belong to a local science center, bring your membership card. Chances are you can get free admission to the Franklin Institute. For more information, check with your science center's website or membership office.
