Betsy Ross House Description

America's most famous flag-maker lived near Independence Hall, and a visit to her home makes the history come alive. Kids of all ages will be fascinated to see things like Betsy's eyeglasses and snuffbox, and will enjoy talking with Betsy herself (a costumed actor) as she tells stories about her life. Stop by the courtyard after you leave the house and enjoy a family-friendly show called Joke and Dagger, hear storytellers, and see colonial crafters at work.

Kid Tips

Babies: A frontpack carrier is a must, since the house has many stairs. The shady, quiet courtyard is a perfect spot to sit and take a break.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Young children will love the shows in the courtyard, and will certainly find an interesting and inexpensive toy in the gift shop.

Pre-Teens & Teens: The optional audio tour is great for young adults, who will enjoy seeing first-hand how people lived over 200 years ago.

Planning Notes

  • Let kids spend their gift-shop money here. While small, the gift shop has a nice selection of toys reproduced from colonial times.
  • Go just before or just after lunch. Nearby Market Street has a number of family-friendly lunch options.
