Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden in Grant Park Description
This sculpture garden contains three life-sized bronze statues, all character's from author Cleary's beloved Ramona (the Pest) Quimby series of children's books. There's mischievous Ramona, the tall and serious Henry Huggins, and Henry's playful dog Ribsy. Any kid who's read Beverly Cleary's books, many of which take place in the neighborhoods around Grant Park, will like them. In the summer the city of Portland turns on the water and -- splash! -- the sculptures become sprayers, but this is a nice place to visit any time of year.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Even though they may never have heard of 'Mona, Grant Park has a fabulous playground and they can climb on and touch the statues.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Grant Park has tennis courts, a softball field, and track, and teens will like the outdoor seasonal swimming complex, Grant Pool.
Planning Notes
- Bring something to throw. With lots of green space, it's a good place to run around and play catch.
- Bring Beverly. It's especially fun to visit this park with a Ramona book in hand. Klickitat Street (where Ramona grew up) is only four blocks away.
- On-street parking only. There's no parking lot and in the summer parking can be difficult at this popular family destination (which is located in a residential neighborhood).
