International Rose Test Garden Description
Portland is serious about roses. So serious that this free public garden in Washington Park has over 6,800 rose bushes in it (the city has even developed a rose martini, but that's a different story). You can find blooming roses in many neighborhood parks and public places, but in this garden, which was founded for the express purpose to test new rose varieties, you and your family will be dazzled like nowhere else in the Rose City.
Kid Tips
Babies: There are fountains, public art, and lots of paved and unpaved paths for toddlers to run on.
School-Age Kids: Teach your child some quotes from Shakespeare before you go and then check out the Shakespeare Garden, where there are dozens of herbs, flowers, and trees mentioned in his plays.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If your teen's neither a budding botanist nor a flower lover, you may want to skip this venue.
Planning Notes
- Smell but don't pick. There's a hefty fine for picking a rose, so tell Sticky Fingers before you go that he can look and smell but not touch the plants.
- Bring a stroller. Or not. Most of the garden (about 70 percent) is stroller- and wheelchair-accessible.
- In Washington Park. You can combine a stroll through the garden with a visit to the other attractions in Washington Park, like the Oregon Zoo, the Children's Museum, and the World Forestry Discovery Center.
