Funcycle Rentals Description
Renting "funcycles" (recumbent bicycles for beach exploration) is a family must-do on the Oregon Coast, and there is no place more enchanting to ride on than Cannon Beach, where the beach is pristine, the seabirds abundant, and the in-town ambience relaxed, friendly, and charming. Also called banana peels, these rickety-seeming yellow three wheelers roll along the wet sand and are as exciting (though not as easy) as they look when you see others riding them.
Kid Tips
Babies: Free Burley trailers hook to the back of the funcycle for toting babies. Note to parents: This is a good workout!
Toddlers & Pre-K: Mike's has mini-funcycles for kids ages 3 to 5, which require the same skill-set as riding a bike. Make sure to get the "whiner bar" (an inner tube to connect the funcycles) for when little legs get tired. Trailers are available for those not quite up to the challenge of riding their own funcycle.
School-Age Kids: Nothing beats this three-wheeler way of exploring the beach.
Planning Notes
- Hours vary depending on the tide. Mike's and other rental shops don't rent funcycles within an hour and a half of high tide. Since the tide is always shifting, call ahead to learn when rentals are available.
- Wear a windbreaker. You'll work up a sweat on the funcycle, but it's quite windy on the beach and a light jacket will come in handy.
Just the Facts
Hours: Summer: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Standard rentals are for 75 minutes, but rental times are tide dependent. Call ahead to confirm availability.
