Tillamook Cheese Factory Tour Description
The smell of cows signals that you've arrived in Tillamook, a town proud of its dairy farmers and home to Oregon's largest cooperative dairy. This popular tourist destination includes a multimedia, hands-on, self-guided tour that kids love, two gift shops that sell local specialty items like cow-shaped cutting boards made from Oregon maplewood, a café, and two ice cream counters. Go straight to the viewing rooms, where your kids will want to spend hours watching the intricate process and ginormous machines involved in making Tillamook's signature orange cheese.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: People wearing funny hats (hair nets), blue machines with multiple "arms," conveyer belts . . . toddlers will want to watch the cheese workers for a long time.
School-Age Kids: There are many, many multimedia displays to make the tour lively, including interactive computer kiosks. The most interesting part of the tour for school-age kids, however: the fascinating (honestly!) cheese trivia. And did we mention there's ice cream?
Planning Notes
- Between Cannon Beach and Lincoln City. The cheese factory is right on Highway 101, conveniently located south of Cannon Beach and north of Lincoln City.
- Go early or late. The factory hosts more than 1 million tourists per year and is one of the most popular destinations on the Oregon Coast. Avoid having to elbow in for the free samples of cheese by going first thing in the morning or an hour before closing.
- Use the restroom. It's clean and spacious and, depending on your final destination, you may not find another one like it (trust us) for many miserable miles.
- Save room for dessert. You probably won't want to fight the crowds and eat lunch or dinner at the factory, but the ice cream is a show-stopper.
- Skip the documentary. The sound isn't very good and smaller kids will get bored quickly.
