Fort Stevens State Park Historic Area Description
Fort Stevens is the largest and one of the most popular campgrounds in Oregon, but it's worth a visit even if you're not camping. Hop onboard a WWII Army truck for a bumpy, noisy, diesel-smelling ride around the historic area and concrete artillery bunkers that once guarded the sea passage up the Columbia River. Or explore the area on foot by taking a 1.5-hour walking tour that goes into underground bunkers (one clean and well-lit, the others scary, even with a flashlight). More interested in nature? Wander off on the Trestle Bay Trail instead.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Skip the underground bunkers if your child is even mildly claustrophobic or afraid of the dark.
School-Age Kids: Kids studying the Civil War or WWII will get a kick out of seeing an actual combat site, especially since it overlooks the sea channel leading to Portland.
Pre-Teens & Teens: No doubt about it, thrill-seekers will love bumping around in the smelly Army truck and delving into the dark bunkers.
Planning Notes
- Bring a flashlight. If exploring bunkers sounds tempting, a flashlight is a necessity.
- Wear walking shoes. The walking tour and trails cover some rough terrain, so proper footwear is required.
- Bring a light jacket. The weather is unpredictable.
