The tour guides give a thorough, entertaining, and relatively quick-moving walk through the home where Edison spent the first seven years of his life. Visitors see nifty stuff like Edison's hat and his wife's graduation gown, and learn fascinating tidbits like who haunts the house, the shortcut the boys used to empty chamber pots, and why Edison proposed to his wife on Christmas day. Babies: There is no room for strollers or baby backpacks in Edison's house, but a frontpack should work.
Toddlers & Pre-K: This is a "don't touch" museum, which makes it a "don't go" for parents of young children.
School-Age Kids: Tales of mischievous Tom will entertain older kids, but younger kids will be bored.
Pre-Teens & Teens: Teens and tweens might be interested to see -- and hear -- the collection of Edison's old phonographs, especially if they have an iPod in their pocket.
Planning Notes
- The house is small. Steep stairs and tiny hallways make for a cramped tour, but guests are welcome to move around and take their time as they go.
- Hang out after the tour. There's more to see in the house where you bought your tickets.
