Merry-Go-Round Museum Description

This old post office building boasts a round interior that looks ready-made for the beautifully restored carousel it hosts. Surrounding the merry-go-round are installations featuring the history of carousel productions, including examples of top artists and pictures of the original carvers. Visitors will also get to see restoration in action when they visit a display hosted by a woodworker. Don't be surprised if your kids whine their way through the tour -- parents might find it interesting, but for kids it's all about the actual carousel. The tour ends with a fast ride on the merry-go-round (and when we say fast, we mean this thing spins faster than other carousels you might have visited).

Kid Tips

Babies: The carousel and pipe organ can be pretty loud. Young babies might be happier staying in the entry or the gift shop with mom or dad.

Toddlers & Pre-K: Children whose feet don't reach the stirrups will need to ride with mom or dad.

Pre-Teens & Teens: Unless they're hard-core fans of carousels, expect crossed arms, dragging feet, and bored sighs.

Planning Notes

  • There's one carousel ride per visitor. Let your kids know beforehand that a visit won't mean endless go-rounds. The one-ride-per-visitor policy is strictly enforced.
  • The French carousel isn't for sitting. One of the most tempting displays is a small carousel that just begs preschoolers to jump the guard rope and try it out.
