Lake Metroparks Farmpark Description

Your kids won't have to say anything -- the look on their faces after they've taken a turn at milking a cow at this 235-acre science center and working farm will say it all. Kids are introduced to the science and culture of farming through interactive experiences -- wagon rides share space with lessons on plant life (from inside the mock root system of an 8-foot in diameter tomato, for example). When the learning is over, there are more than 100 animals to pet and feed. They'll have so much fun they may think a day at the farm is a day at the park.

Kid Tips

Babies: There are a lot of sights and sounds on the grounds, and during holiday events crowds can grow quite large. Consider visiting during off-peak hours to miss the noise and commotion.

Toddlers & Pre-K: This working farm with animals of all types offers the perfect visual link for children who've been singing "Old Macdonald" at home. Opt for a wagon ride to avoid tiring out little feet.

Planning Notes

  • Leave Fido at home. No pets are allowed at Lake Metroparks Farmpark because they have so many of their own.
  • Key dates. If you plan your visit right, you can catch the summer farmers market (June through October), Halloween celebrations (corn and pumpkin harvest, plus hay rides), or Christmas light festivities and double the excitement of your visit.
  • Good for all ages. There isn't an age group that won't get a kick out of this place but watch your kids for cues on how long you should stay. Older kids will likely be ready to head for the hills a few hours before little ones.
