Kid favorites Grandma Freda's Cupcakes and Candy Coma are just two of the stalls that share space with merchants selling everything from empanadas and cheese to meats and fudge in this nearly 100-year-old historic market square. It's the perfect stop for a picnic stock-up trip or just to people watch. Young ones will be awestruck by the market's lively atmosphere and the multitude of choices. The square across the street often showcases local crafts and music, and offers a great place to start your nibbling.

Kid Tips

School-Age Kids: Grocery shopping might not seem like a kid-friendly excursion, but having the chance to meet and greet the farmers who grow and sell the fruits and vegetables is a unique treat. Soon they'll be trying things they'd never taste at home and asking questions ("Do you live here?") that'll give them a deeper understanding of where food comes from.

Planning Notes

  • Pack a bottle of water. No one will want to want to wait for the trip home to begin their munching. Pack a bottle of water for rinsing fruits so they can start in right away.
  • Plan ahead. Weekend mornings are too crowded to visit with little ones in tow.
  • Individual hours. If there's a specific booth you want to visit, call ahead. Some vendors choose to operate on their own schedule within the market's official hours.
