'A Christmas Story' House Description
"That's the lamp from the movie!" said one 6-year-old, pointing at the famous "leg lamp" that garnishes the front window of the house where "A Christmas Story" was filmed. More like a neighbor's house than a museum (all of the breakable things are located in the museum and store across the street), kids can pretend to be Ralphie and recreate their favorite scenes from the movie, climbing under the kitchen sink or posing next to the Christmas tree.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Stick to the house with little ones in tow. The gift shop doesn't have much elbow room, and offers plenty of opportunities to knock over breakables.
Pre-Teens & Teens: If they like the movie, they'll love every moment of this experience. Make sure they bring their camera and take a photo with the fake roast turkey in the kitchen.
Planning Notes
- Hard to find. This isn't a soundstage -- the home is deep inside a regular neighborhood outside of downtown. Make sure to have a good set of directions and visit during the daylight hours to make navigating easier.
- Don't skip the gift shop. Everything from lunch pails to nightlights bearing the beloved motifs and scenes can be found here. You may even have to talk your teen out of buying the iconic leg lamp for home.
- Annual convention. Unless you're a die-hard fan, don't schedule your visit during the annual November convention celebrating the movie when the house is at its most crowded. Planning your trip for just before or immediately after the convention, however, will give you a chance to see the house at its peak.
- Tours are recommended -- and required. They're offered every 30 minutes, with the last tour at 4:30 p.m.
