Frisco Native American Museum Description
The Frisco Native American Museum is a treasure located halfway between the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the ferry to Ocracoke. The unassuming building holds an astonishing amount of artifacts, including animal mounts and a wishing drum which kids beat on as they make a wish. (Many kids will later call the curators to tell them that their wishes came true.) A nature trail winds through the nearby woods, leading kids to a miniature longhouse and a fossil pile which kids love to dig in to. They get to keep any fossils they find, virtually guaranteeing show-and-tell stardom when they get back to school.
Kid Tips
Toddlers & Pre-K: Kids can make their own sand art at the sand table in the gift shop.
School-Age Kids: Encourage your child to ask a staff member questions. They're happy to answer, and it will make the visit more interesting.
Planning Notes
- Call ahead. The museum director is an energetic and knowledgeable guide. Visit when he's there for a museum visit like no other.
- Special event. The last weekend of April the museum holds an Inter-tribal Pow-Wow, featuring storytellers, workshops, flute-makers, and more.
- Gift shop. The museum takes care that all the crafts sold in the gift shop are made by Native American artisans. No imports allowed, period.
