Thomas Wolfe Memorial Description
Asheville's most celebrated writer is Thomas Wolfe, who chronicled small-town America during the early 1900s—but it wasn't always that way. After his breakout novel Look Homeward, Angel was published, Wolfe was shunned for it being too true to life about the town's inhabitants and happenings, and his book was banned from the local Asheville library for nearly eight years. Wolfe fled town, and it wasn't until the novel became famous across the United States that Asheville locals welcomed him back. A self-guided tour of the Victorian-style Old Kentucky Home and guided tour of the boarding house where Wolfe was raised features exhibits and an audio-visual presentation on Wolfe's life and work which together create the perfect environment for understanding Wolfe's contributions to American literature.
Kid Tips
School-Age Kids: Guided tours are a terrific way to help bring to life stories students read in school and Wolfe's real-life surroundings and artifacts.

- Check for special events. Live plays, radio shows, and live music happen regularly throughout the year: http://www.wolfememorial.com/calendar.
- Bring snacks. While there is a small gift shop and a public restroom, there is no cafe on site. There are, however, many kid-friendly nearby restaurants in Asheville; some in walking distance.
